Another Lousy Day in Paradise
   by John Gierach

Customer Review from Amazon.Com
A Good Day's Reading. Another Day in Paradise was the first of John Gierach's books that I read. After putting it down, I could hardly wait to order another. Having waded through quite a few flyfishing books in which authors try to create highly sophisticated reasons for the sport of flyfishing, it is good to read a book by a man who believes that many people simply fish because it is fun! Gierach writes with the fireside wit of outdoor writer Gene Hill combined with the irreverance of Mark Twain. I have read all of his books of humor, yet I keep a copy of Another Day in Paradise in my car to suffice during those many periods of waiting that occur.

American Fly Fishing: A History American Fly Fishing: A History
   by Paul Schullery

Customer Review from Amazon.Com
As one casts for trout with a modern high-tech rod, line, leader and one of the zillion fly patterns now available, it is easy to forget how far we have come in the 250 or so years that fly fishing has been practiced in North America, and yet how little things have really changed in terms of the techniques used, concepts of what constitutes necessary equipment, and the attitude of serious endeavor that pervades all aspects of fly fishing. Paul Schullery has complied an exhaustive volume that takes the reader from old world origins of the sport and how they influenced Colonial American fishing, and in particular, fly fishing,to the advances in tackle and techniques during the Victorian era, and finally to our modern practices.

The Compleat Angler: Or the Contemplative Man's Recreation
   by Izaak Walton

Customer Review from Amazon.Com
A rare portal to an untainted world of tranquil delight. If you don't know about this famous book by the inimitable Walton, you have a lot to look forward to. Purporting to be an account of a 5-day gentlemen's fishing idyll (when gentlemen were gentlemen, and the English countryside was at once bountiful and near to hand), it is in fact a deeply engaging nostalgia trip into a never-never land of pastoral bliss which has no exact parallel in world literature.....

Crosscurrents: A Fly Fisher's Progress Crosscurrents: A Fly Fisher's Progress
   by James R. Babb

Customer Review from Amazon.Com
Babb is one hell of a writer, and Crosscurrents is about more than just fish and antique split bamboo rods. It's about one man's spiritual journey from his boyhood home in the hills of East Tennessee to the lobsterman's life in the cold North Atlantic, to the hills of Maine, where he now resides. Plenty of adventures along the way, unforgettable characters, cultural observations, literary and historical allusions, and some really fine writing. I've never thrown a dry fly in my life, but I loved it, anyway.

Dances With Trout Dances With Trout
   by John Gierach

Customer Review from Amazon.Com
Don't flyfish? Don't fish at all? It doesn't matter! I'm an avid bass angler who has never done much flyfishing, but after reading a good Gierach,(they're all great,) I'm ready to head out to that little creek in Montana, or that bass pond in Texas, or even Scotland with a fly rod and join him. This was the first book of his I read and now I'm on my fourth. I love how relaxed and fun his writing is, and I, personally, can relate to a lot of his views and feelings about things. Even for the non-angler, John Gierach is alot of fun, even if you have no idea what the heck a #14 Royal Wulff is. If you're looking for some great reading, go with Gierach.

Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders: A John Gierach Fly Fishing Treasury Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders: A John Gierach Fly Fishing Treasury
   by John Gierach

Customer Review from Amazon.Com
I splurged on this book without knowing anything about John Gierach (sacrilege?), and felt like I'd discovered America. As an inchoate fly-fisher, I found his stories so exciting that every time I sat down to read it I wanted to rush out to practice my casting in the hope that one day, I too would have stories like these to tell. I've found that many books by veteran fishermen discourage me from trying to get my waders wet--this book does the opposite (and I wonder if the author regrets this response!).

The Earth Is Enough: Growing Up in a World of Fly Fishing, Trout, & Old Men The Earth Is Enough: Growing Up in a World of Fly Fishing, Trout, & Old Men
   by Harry Middleton

Customer Review from Amazon.Com
This book has it all. It's funny, touching, beautifully written, easy to read, contains life lessons - what more could you want? And I don't even fly fish!!! Buy it, read it, keep it, re-read it. I first read it years ago, and keep buying copies as gifts.

Even Brook Trout Get the Blues Even Brook Trout Get the Blues
   by John Gierach

Customer Review from Amazon.Com
If you've ever trout fished, this is a must. Gierach has a wit and a love for nature like no one I have ever read. Every story he tells is not only an incredible experience, but most of the time a lesson well learned. As I read along, I found myself wanting to be standing streamside with John,A.K.,and the rest of the boys. Although Gierach seems to have strong opinions, he doesn't come off as "I'm right cause I wrote the book." He is more of, "Here's what I think, you decide for yourself." Thanks John, keep em coming.
